Net vs Gross Salary: Tax Gap and Effective Rate

Compare gross monthly pay and net monthly take-home. The page shows the difference (treated as tax and other withholdings between the two figures) and your effective tax rate as a percentage of gross. You enter both numbers yourself, usually from a payslip. Not tax advice and not a substitute for Skatteverket.

How to use

Enter Gross Salary and Net Salary for the same pay period (typically monthly). Difference (Tax) = gross minus net when net is lower. Effective tax rate = difference ÷ gross × 100. If net exceeds gross, difference shows as zero because the page uses max(0, gross − net).

Example

Gross 40,000 kr and net 28,000 kr gives difference 12,000 kr and effective rate 30.00%. That 30% is a summary of everything between the two lines on your spec, not only municipal income tax.

Tips

Use figures from the same month. Bonus months, parental leave, or tax refunds can skew one month. Pension, union, and insurance lines are included in the gap even though the label says tax. For net from gross plus a rate, use the Tax After Salary tool.
